What is Mean Absolute Deviation?
Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) measures the average distance between each data point and the mean of the data set. It is one of the simplest and most intuitive measures of statistical dispersion — easier to understand than standard deviation for many people, and still powerful enough for serious analysis.
Unlike variance or standard deviation, MAD does not square the differences. Every unit of distance from the mean contributes equally. The result stays in the same units as your original data, which makes it far easier to explain to students, clients, or colleagues who are not statisticians.
